Cultural Sites

The Merced County Courthouse Museum, est. 1875, is a short walk up 21st Street from Garden Gate. It is open Wednesdays through Sundays, 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

The Historic Merced Theatre, a local icon build in the 1930’s and lovingly completely restored for its grand reopening in October, 2006. The Merced Symphony, touring shows, movies, plays, and other important local events are held there.


Merced National Wildlife Refuge

Just a few miles from is a major National Wildlife Refuge featuring a 5-mile auto route and nature trails for viewing and wild life photographing. Thousands of Sand Hill Cranes, Canadian Geese, Avocets, Sandpipers, Ibis, ducks of all types, and many other migrating species flock here in Winter.


University of California Merced

Not to be missed is the prize-winning campus of the newest University of California. Established in 2005, UC Merced is the first American research university to be built in the 21st century. UC Merced is the only institution in the United States to have all of its buildings on campus to be LEEDS certified. Its Triple Net Zero Commitment is expected to create zero net landfill waste and zero net greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2020.

Local Attractions

With over 20 miles of bide paths and beautiful walking trails here in Merced, there is much to see. A favorite walk near Garden Gate Bed and Breakfast runs along Bear Creek, a lovely tree-lined creek running through the center of town.

Lake Yosemite, a man-made lake near the UC campus is another lovely destination for sailing, swimming, and picnics throughout the year.

Applegate Park and Zoo

Located in the center of Merced, bordered by Bear Creek, is a 23 acre park and zoo. Visitors will enjoy the stately trees, picnic tables, tennis courts, a small amphitheater, and Veteran Memorials, along with the historic Laura’s Fountain.

The Vista Ranch and Cellars

The Vista Ranch is a 20-acre Historical Ranch including farm plots, vineyards, wine tasting, weekly events, weddings, and gift shop. In the summer, outdoor BBW’s fill the air with great food and live entertainment.

Yosemite National Park

Plan to spend some time exploring beautiful Yosemite National Park, one of the most spectacular parks in the world. Yosemite is home to hundreds of species of birds, mammals, wildflowers and over 30 species of trees. A convenient way to get there is riding a YARTS bus from Merced to Yosemite. It is a comfortable and inexpensive way to travel there. Our staff will be happy to take you to and from the depot upon request. You may leave your car safely parked here for your trip.
